Unchained: How Kidumu Escaped the Grip of Drugs
Kidumu, a young adult fresh out of high school, was living what seemed like the peak of his youth until the National Agency Against Drug Selling and Trafficking began to follow his trail.rnrnBorn into a devoted Christian family, Kidumu’s father—a well-respected pastor of a mega-church in their region—was known for his strict parenting. From a young age, Kidumu’s life revolved around church: singing in the choir every week, attending services without fail. Many believed he was destined to follow his father’s footsteps and become a pastor of great influence across Africa.rnrnHis family spared no effort in ensuring he received a world-class education, confident he would carry their legacy forward. For years, Kidumu excelled in school, admired by his peers for his intelligence and discipline. But in Senior Five, everything changed. His grades began to plummet, semester after semester, leaving teachers and friends baffled.rnrnThe hidden truth behind his decline was a growing addiction. At just 17, Kidumu had started drinking alcohol—illegal for minors in his country—and soon was consuming it in excessive amounts. But alcohol was only the beginning. He also picked up smoking cigarettes and eventually marijuana, all introduced through peer pressure. What began as experimentation turned into an unbreakable chain, dragging him deeper each day.rnrnBarely scraping through to Senior Six, Kidumu graduated with a poor grade—just enough to earn a high school diploma but far from his true potential. During his gap year before university, his habits intensified. He not only smoked and drank but occasionally helped sell marijuana with his peers.rnrnOne evening, during a gathering with his gang, the police raided the house. Kidumu and his friends were arrested and sent to a rehabilitation center for three months. These centers were established to combat drug abuse and provide treatment for addicts.rnrnLife in rehab was a harsh contrast to the comfort he was used to. Gone were the plentiful breakfasts and fruit-filled meals of home. Instead, mornings began with runs at dawn, cleaning chores, and porridge with little sugar. Lunch and dinner rotated between maize, posho, and rice—served only twice a week. Yet, amidst the discomfort, Kidumu found reflection. The rehabilitation program taught him about the destructive nature of drugs and forced him to reimagine his future.rnrnGradually, his mindset changed. He realized that drugs were a dead end, a barrier to his dreams of becoming a software engineer—and possibly, one day, a pastor like his father. His progress in behavior and attitude earned him an early release alongside a few peers who had shown genuine change.rnrnNow, as Kidumu prepares to enroll in university, he carries a renewed purpose: to pursue his career dreams and to use his story as a beacon for others. He has vowed to educate his peers about the dangers of drug abuse, hoping his experience will inspire his generation to lead the fight against addiction. 0 Likes 0 RepliesShareSave
Through the darkness: a story of Friendship, loss, and healing
Through the darkness: a story of Friendship, loss, and healing
Rwema, a 24-year-old man from Eastern Rwanda, had always known a life of stability and love. Raised in a caring family with supportive siblings, he enjoyed a life full of comfort and security, never lacking for anything. His world seemed perfect, until it all began to unravel.rnrnFirst, Rwema lost his beloved girlfriend, who married another man, shattering his heart. Soon after, his farm was engulfed in flames, and his business, once thriving, collapsed under the pressure of increasing competition in the purchase-resale market. The financial burden became too heavy to bear, and Rwema was forced into bankruptcy. The bank seized everything he owned, leaving him with only a small house to call his own. The weight of his losses plunged him into sleepless nights and haunting dreams, often involving his ex-girlfriend and the promising business that had slipped through his fingers.rnrnAs he faced these overwhelming hardships, Rwema learned the painful truth about his so-called friends. Many had only been interested in what he could offer—his wealth, his support, and the luxurious lifestyle he once provided. In the end, he found himself with only one true friend, Ruhumuriza, his childhood companion, who stood by him when everyone else faded away. Meanwhile, his nuclear family was falling apart, each member grappling with their own struggles, and no one could unite them to face the challenges together. Most believed their misfortunes were some sort of divine punishment.rnrnBut hope arrived in an unexpected form. Rwema was reunited with Linda, a former high school friend who had spent the last four years studying clinical psychology in Pennsylvania. During her training, Linda had encountered various mental health conditions and quickly recognized that Rwema was suffering from one of them. Determined to help, she became a beacon of support in his life.rnrnTheir journey toward healing began with informal meetings, first in a restaurant and then at a game park for two initial consultations. These sessions laid the foundation for the professional therapy that would follow. Linda's expertise in mental health and Rwema's commitment to healing led to a remarkable recovery. Over time, Rwema learned that mental health issues like PTSD were not insurmountable, and he began to regain control of his life.rnrnAs Rwema’s recovery progressed, Linda recognized the need to address the stigma surrounding mental health in their community. She realized that people like Rwema, who had endured trauma and loss, needed safe spaces where they could heal, thrive, and rebuild their lives. Together, they launched a campaign to raise awareness about mental health and challenge the misconceptions that still held sway in their society.rnrnTheir efforts culminated in the creation of the Rwema-Linda Foundation, a regional center dedicated to treating mental health conditions and providing support for those in need. Through their work, they demonstrated that with proper care and understanding, individuals suffering from mental health illnesses could heal and become agents of change in their communities.rnrnThe story ends on a note of joy and fulfillment, as Rwema and Linda, having supported one another through the darkest of times, fall in love and marry. They dedicate their lives to ensuring that others who struggle with mental health can find the support they need. Together, they continue their mission to bring hope, healing, and understanding to their region, continent, and beyond. Their story is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the transformative strength of mental health care. 0 Likes 0 RepliesShareSave
